We all have one of ‘those days’ from time to time.
It’s a funny one… It’s almost like you just know as soon as you wake up that you’re not feeling quite yourself.
And sometimes it can just take one tiny stupid thing like stepping in to an alarmingly cold shower (”WHO USED ALL THE BLOODY HOT WATER?!”) or getting caught in the rain on your commute that can trigger an endless trail of ‘bad things’ that happen to you through out the day. Know what I mean?
To have days like that is just what makes us human – and in a way isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Because once you come out of that negative mindset; you appreciate life even more and how fabulous it feels to have everything go nice and smoothly again! It’s a question of how can you know what’s good, when you haven’t experienced the bad?
However, I strongly believe that there are simple, really small things you can do in your day to stop it from being a total disaster… Things that I have learnt from my journey of going through months of having ‘those days’.
I’m sharing a few of my top ways to instantly boost your mood and let the good vibes RADIATE! Because life is waaay too short to let small things get to you… Am I right?
PUT THINGS IN TO PERSPECTIVE
Take a second to think your situation through. These negative emotions are down to things not going your way; your daily routine has been messed around and it’s thrown you off a little. Ask yourself: is it really that bad? When you nail the reason you’re feeling down and say it out loud – I bet you that it will sound pretty stupid. Try comparing it to a time you’ve had a genuinely hard time in life. Now it really sounds pathetic! Put things in to perspective, get over it and make the most of your day. You won’t get it back!
This is very simple, but it works. In life, it’s so easy to get sucked in to your own selfish world but making others feel good about themselves is an amazing way to instantly boost not only their mood; but yours, too! Knowing you have made someone smile and possibly even made their day is a pretty good reason to feel better about yourself, right? Tell your mum how pretty she looks today, or even comment on the girl at the checkouts’ amazing manicure! Radiate positivity and it will reflect back on to you. Word.
HAVE A PAMPER SESH
Let’s be real here – you’re not going to feel great about yourself if you look in the mirror and see a dull complexion, tired eyes and frizzy hair. Pop in to town on your way home and pick up a few of your favourite pamper goods (I love Lush bubble bars, face masks and Neals Yard essential oils in my bath!) so you can show your body some serious loving. Opt for uplifting scents like orange, lemon and geranium to make you smell amazing and feel brand new!
Ever feel like you want to burst in to a flood of tears – and you don’t know why? Sometimes life can get a little overwhelming and all you need to do is slow down, separate yourself from it all and take a few moments to just breathe. Be in the moment – forget about what’s happened or what will happen and bring yourself back in to the present. Sit somewhere quiet where you feel at ease, put your hands on your stomach and breathe in and out through the nose. As you inhale, mentally say ‘LET’ and with the out exhale say ‘GO’… This is a great way to release some amazing calm feelings in your body!
WRITE IT DOWN
At the end of each day before you go to sleep, get a notepad and write down 3 good things that happened to you that day. It can be the smallest thing; like the smile you exchanged with a stranger, the coffee you had in your favourite place or the Instagram like you got from your favourite person… (!) Remember that there is always something to be grateful for in life and sometimes we can forget about those small things that really make a difference in our day. When you look back at your notepad, you’ll soon see how much good in your life there is to smile about and you won’t feel so hard done by.
TAKE A WALK
Tempted to lock yourself in your room with a tub of Ben & Jerrys and a movie? Stop right there! Get your trainers on and go for a walk in the fresh air – the ultimate tonic for clearing your head and making you feel instantly refreshed. You’ll soak up a good dose of your daily vitamin D (essential for being happy) from the sun, too! Take your dog with you or meet a friend to go for a walk in the park and let the endorphins really work their anti-depressant magic. Feelin’ gooood.
Now this is the smallest you can do to feel happier, but I swear it gives maximum impact! It might sound ridiculous, but studies have shown that even a fake smile can instantly make you feel happier in an instant. Grin like you’ve never grinned before and see how it can have a positive effect on how you feel… It’s actually pretty amazing and I gotta say, it never fails with me!
Last of all, don’t be hard on yourself. It’s totally okay to feel the way you do and it doesn’t at all make you a bad person just because you’re having an off day. Just try giving these simple steps a go and learn to live in the present, appreciate everything you have and those bad vibes will be loooong gone.
