I’m yet to meet a blackberry I didn’t like: In a crumble, in a muffin, as a porridge topper – you cannot go wrong with this tarte fruit that is currently growing in abundance around the the humble hedges of the UK. But tell me how the hell have I waited this look to blend them in to a smoothie? I feel like I’ve been doing it all wrong thus far! Those unmistakable bites of pure seasonal goodness are completely faultless in this refreshing blend to see you through the last of those hazy summer mornings.
I strongly urge you guys to channel your inner forager and be prepared to get your hands dirty on a blackberry picking mission. As twee and ‘country bumpkin’ as the whole idea sounds; I’m pretty sure that there is nothing more satisfying than filling up a bag with the latest seasonal offerings just ready and waiting to be baked, blended and enjoyed however your stomach may desire. And it’s not just that! You can absolutely consider it to count towards your daily exercise; so leave your phone at home, breathe in that fine late summer fresh air and get lost for a little while soaking up the total beauty going on around you. Let me tell you my friends, as someone who works a job that involves constantly checking social media – it is so grounding to disconnect from it all and just go outside to appreciate what’s happening in the real world. Those wild plants! Those insane colours! Those fine ass aromas! Unfortunately it’s just too damn easy to miss these things on a daily basis as we’re rushing around – so be sure to be on the look out for the blackberries when you’re next commuting. They’re juicy AF right now – so you definitely wanna jump on that blackberry picking band wagon soon!
Anyhoo, I digress. Can we talk about yacon syrup now?
I’m all sorts of excited to collaborate with the awesome Of The Earth Superfoods to share with you my blackberry smoothie recipe, which is sweetened up with their yacon syrup for the sweetest tasting prebiotic boost to ever grace my mouth.
So where exactly does this fancy shmancy syrup come from and why is it worth me looking in to, you ask?
Well, yacon syrup is derived from a root vegetable grown in the Andes Mountains – and despite it sounding like another passing ‘wellness trend’ (eugh!) – it’s actually nothing new. Nope, this stuff goes back thousands of years – and it’s only up until recently that it has been recognised as a certified food product in the EU (shout out to OTE’s parent company Alara Wholefood’s for making this happen)! You’ll find it in a few power snacks, good for you breakfast cereals and of course in the pure yacon syrup form – which is exactly what we’re using here in this perfect post-summer smoothie.
And what makes it a prebiotic? The fact that it contains FOS – sugar molecules that are connected in a way that our digestive systems don’t recognise. This is good news for our guts because when these molecules reach the large intestines they can help to stimulate the good bacteria, ultimately helping them to grow – meaning happy days for our digestion and immune system! What’s more is a teaspoon contains 6g of fibre, which OTE say is particularly good if you want a sweet fix that won’t spike your blood sugar levels. One thing I will say is that you might wanna hold your horses and do some more research if you’re on a low FODMAP diet – as these sugars can trigger symptoms for those who suffer with IBS.
The dark syrup is real similar in appearance to molasses – and can be used just as you would maple syrup and honey: Go forth and drizzle this bad boy on your oats, stir in to your hot drinks or use as a natural sugar alternative in your favourite bakes. What I personally love is that you really don’t need much to get the intense sweet flavour – a little bit really does go a long way, so start off with a little and see how your taste buds and gut are feeling the benefits! I have mentioned here many a time that I feel my peachiest when on a low sugar diet – so yacon syrup has been my dream go to sweetener as of lately.
You’ll find it blended up here with seasonal juicy blackberries, lemon, ginger, mint and of course cauliflower, AKA hands down the best low sugar smoothie base yet. I know it sounds a little far fetched – but if like myself you struggle with finding sweet fixes that don’t make your stomach go in to freak mode, then you have got to give it a try. Just be sure to PRE-STEAM the florettes first before freezing to make it easier for your gut to digest! It goes with out saying that nothing sucks more than the infamous ‘smoothie bloat’… ‘Nuh what I’m saying?!
I really hope you love this lip smacking combo just as much as I do – and go ahead and let me know if you try the yacon syrup. Given it’s such a versatile product, I reckon you’ll be using it on regular rotation once you’ve cracked open your first bottle!
Happy blending, boo.
- ¼ head cauliflower - chopped, steamed and frozen
- 1 cup blackberries
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 inch ginger, minced
- 7 mint leaves
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- ⅓ cup almond milk (or any milk you like)
- 1tsp yacon syrup
- optional add ins: collagen protein, protein powder, maca, lucuma
- Simply place all the ingredients in a blender and whizz up until nice and smooth. Feel free op with whatever goods you got going for an extra crunch! I like bee pollen, more blackberries and a little more fresh mint for a real nice and refreshing summer snack.
