Your bedroom is not just a place to throw your things in at the end of the day before heading to sleep. Hell no! Your bedroom is your own personal sanctuary; a space where you can go to disconnect from the B.S (social media, life pressures and work stress) and ultimately reconnect back with yourself so you can focus on the good shit. You know, the stuff that actually matters. You see, when you fill your room with things that make you feel uplifted, inspired and creative; that’s when the real magic happens.
Think about it: You spend quite a fair amount of your life in that one room. It’s where you sleep (and we all know that a good nights sleep means a happy functioning human) it’s where you get ready for work (always helps to have your your pants on the right way before you step out the house I guess), and also where you come home afterwards, to switch off and zen the hell out. So yeah, very important if you want that balance in your life.
And you know what’s pretty cool about having your own designated chill space? The fact that when it comes to the overall designing of it, you can be whoever the hell you want to be. A florist? Oh, sure! An abstract painter? Why the hell not! A nifty antique dealer? Well, if the flap cap fits…
But more on that later.
If you’re a Pinterest fiend like myself and often find yourself filling your boards with the ‘dream interiors’ that you can only posess in a fantasy world where budget isn’t an issue – then perhaps it is time to adapt your mindset to think a little more, let’s say, resourceful. Because really, you don’t have to spend much dollar to achieve your most pinned bedroom space, and that is quite a sexy thought, no?
As my style and personal taste is forever evolving, I am always on the look out for new ways to switch things up in my room to keep things fresh, updated and relevant to me and my life. I’d like to think that I have learned a handy hack or two along the way, and I’m pretty excited to share them with you! They are all simple, realistic and actually rather therapeutic things that can make a big difference – so whether you’re moving in to a new house or want to add a little something to your uni room, then be sure to read ahead!
MIX OLD WITH NEW
You know what? As much hate as it gets – I really don’t mind a little Ikea furniture here and there. Let’s face it: The Scandi style is utterly faultless, and although it is by no means the best quality wood in the game, it sure does the job pretty good whilst ensuring your purse isn’t going to suffer in the process. The only thing to watch out for is going too overboard with the stuff; the last thing you want is for your room to look like a showroom straight out of the Ikea catalogue. You know, you want some character, some self expression, some va-va-voom!
So how exactly is this accomplished, you ask? Simple: Mix your modern furniture up with pre-loved pieces. Having that balance between the white wash/pine and the darker, more antique solid woods is the way forward for when it comes to decking out your room in an affordably chic way.
Channel your inner bidder and head to your local antique show (flap cap optional) to score a mega steal that you will no doubt be continuously serving you for many beautiful years to come! I picked up this chest of drawers for 40 and painted half of it off-white to lighten it up and make it my own. And you know what? It is still one of my favourite pieces to date – and it looks just the picture positioned right there with that iconic Ikea side table for a modern rustic spin on things.
WHERE TO LOOK: For the modern furniture try Ikea, JYSK, Argos and Amazon – then for the real deal you want to go to Antique shows. It is oh-SO worth the trip, trust me!
CERAMIC POTS = LIFE | LIFE = CERAMIC POTS
No, really! You simply cannot go wrong with a little ceramic action to step up your interior plant game. Not only are they real easy to get hold of (think garden centres and interior stores) but they’re also a refreshingly purse friendly way to make the most of your blooming collection and add a mega pop of uplifting colour to your own space.
You can get them in all kinds of varieties, so get a good selection going and start playing around with the way you display them!
Hanging ceramics, for example, are destined to hold plants that drop down – like the String of Pearls (AKA my dearly beloved)…
And this simple pot here brings a white space to life, whilst introducing a subtle hit of unexpected-but-still-complimentary colour in to the room that breaks the risk of everything being too ‘matchy matchy’. Any one else not feeling the uniformed vibe?!
It keeps on getting better! Ceramics come in vase form too. Still sort of obsessing over this neutral duo which I picked up from Next recently; it’s like their so chic that they don’t even need a plant in them to give effect. Now that’s special.
WHERE TO LOOK: TK Maxx, any good independent lifestyle shops, florists, charity shops and garden centres can do no wrong.
PLANTS & BLOOMS? GO WILD.
It goes with out saying that if you’re going to have pots and vases – you want some show stopping plants and flowers to display in them. You wanna know one of the easiest ways to update your room? Go ALL out with the blooms and greens. Don’t hold back now; the more, the better.
Sure, you can head to your local supermarket and pick up a bunch of roses or tulips (which, may I add, half of the population will also be in possession of #meh) and put them in a vase to look all neat and cutesy – but how’s about taking a trip to the wild side and picking a personalised bunch yourself? Don’t get me wrong – I love a good bouquet just as much as the next guy, but you still cannot beat the look of a simple wild bloom in a bottle. There is just something about it: Elegant, yet cool and understated. Kinda like the Alexa Chung of the flower world, if you will.
If your garden isn’t offering much in the way of plants – then head to the flower market and pick up some of the fillers and foliage to mix up with some seasonal flowers. Eaaaaasy!
And I don’t just like to see a whole lot of greens on my plate… They are just as welcome in my bedroom! Give them a home in a selection of different pots and pair them in corners with your a few of your favourite things, like candles, jewellery, make up or ornaments. Go to town with displaying them around your room and let their urban charm work its magic.
WHERE TO LOOK: For the plants – try independent florists and lifestyle shops as well as garden centres. Then for the flowers, try the garden first and if not, the flower market is your next best option. Mix it up!
SO YOU’RE AN ARTEEST, HUH?
Do not be afraid to whip out the old paints, my friends! Let me tell you that there is nothing more satisfying than having a good old fashioned art therapy session that results in something you can display in your very own sanctuary, knowing that no one else will have the same. Opt for abstract: That way you don’t have any boundaries and you can’t actually make a wrong stroke. The only rule? Choose the colours that you love and that compliment your bedroom and everything will fall in to place on that canvas.
I’ve mentioned on my Instagram how partial I am to a painting sesh whenever I need to let my mind escape – and it really does work! Think of it as the most simple way to get back in touch with your inner child; and any worries that have built up over the day are suddenly swept right under the ‘I Don’t Give A Fuck’ bridge. So even if you don’t end up with a masterpiece that you feel happy enough with to put on your wall – at least you have done something to completely detach you from the everyday bullshit (although the chances are it will be awesome anyway. Anything passes as far as abstract is concerned!)
WHERE TO LOOK: Acrylic paints are crazy cheap to get hold of and I can recommend heading to stationary shops like The Works to get your fresh canvas’. They do all different sizes – so get a few and work with those!
I HAVE THIS THING WITH CUSHIONS.
You know that feeling when you slip on a new pair of shoes and you just know that they are right for you? Well, I kinda get the same feeling with cushions. Getting that right one isn’t always easy to find – but once you do come across one that is going to brighten up that plain chair or add that much needed cosy touch to your bed, MAN is it a good feeling!
Just me? Okay. Fine. You do you and I’ll do me.
But seriously – getting the right balance of cushions is a crazy simple way to add something different to your sanctuary. You want to avoid getting two the same and instead go for a variety of colours and textures that compliment each other with out being too samey samey.
This chair right here was crying out for an extra something to bring it to life – and this embroidered number suited my criteria like an absolute dream.
As for the bedding, I’m more in to my softer tones: Think neutrals, blush and warming fabrics to help set the vibe for a sweet nights sleep. That is where the magic happens, after all… *
*I’m talking night time turmeric lattes, snacks on repeat and a whole lot of Netflix marathons. What could be more magic than that?
WHERE TO LOOK: Any interior/home shop will be able to offer you some purse friendly cushions! Try M&S, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Next and TK Maxx for the best of the bunch.
MAKE BASKETS YOUR NEW BFF
Oh, wicker please! Baskets I feel are one of those trends that just never go out of style – and for damn good reason, too. Affordable, easy to get hold of and available in every size and shape you could possibly ever dream of; adding a few wicker baskets to your space is a truly effortless way to step up your interior game.
Try placing your favourite plants in them, use them to store any extra linen (and have a little peaking out for that extra homey touch) or simply just have a couple on display with candles and succulent plants. That natural vibe works oh-SO well in pretty much bedroom and really helps to set the scene for a chilled space for you to completely unwind.
WHERE TO LOOK: Homemare shops like Homebase have an endless selection of baskets to choose from, whilst you could always look down the home aisle in your local supermarket. Like I said, they are not hard to find!
Going for storage that doubles as cool units is a perfect way to display your favourite beauty and lifestyle goods (chic) and keeping any clutter to a minimum (hoarding is definitely not chic).
Anything with wire has my heart; you can’t beat that simplistic effect and everything you put inside is going to look insanely cool – even the real everyday things like nail polishes and perfumes. When it comes to adding a personal touch to your room, it really is about the small details – but just be sure to be selective!
Instead of a a standard bedside table, try mixing things up with one in a ladder style: Not only do you get more space to store your books and night time essentials but it adds an extra element to your space… Think that Scandi-meets-Urban kinda vibe. Noice!
WHERE TO LOOK: Try online at eBay and Amazon, as well as places like IKEA, Urban Outfitters and TK MAXX.
STICK TO YOUR METALS
Nothing ruins your day like stepping out in outfit with rose gold details to realise the strap on your bag is silver.
Slightly melodramatic? Perhaps. But the fact is that if you want to nail a particular theme for your room then choosing one metal finish and sticking to it is a pretty good place to start.
I painted my room white with soft greys so that I could go to town with filling it with whatever I want – so I opted for rose gold and copper tones to really warm things up in there. Not that I have anything against silver, but I find it can be quite cold and let’s face it: Life is so much better with copper. Amiright or amiright?!
I picked out my bedside lamp and ceiling light in a rose gold and I’m always on the look out for matching accessories to subtly scatter through out the room to tie everything together. The pair together set me back by just 50, which ain’t half bad when you think about how much you’re going to use them and how Pinterest worthy they truly are.
WHERE TO LOOK: EVERYWHERE! TK Maxx, Urban Outfitters, independent homeware stores and lifestyle shops always have a sweet selection of copper delights.
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS
You see these curtains? When I first got them I had that annoying feeling where I knew that they were seriously lacking in something, but I couldn’t quite figure out what it was. And then like a lightbulb (ironically at 11pm at night, just as I was about to drift off) it came to me: ‘OF COURSE! Pom pom’s. Those curtains need pom pom’s right now.’
Like, what else? Why I hadn’t I realised this sooner?!
One trip to the haberdashery store and 3 cups of honey roobios tea later, my mum (who is a total pro with the sewing machine #BLESSED) had transformed those mediocre curtains in to a pair that make me want to open them up every morning and embrace the fresh day of possibilites. It really is the small detail that go a long way!
You can buy pom poms in all different colours for cheap enough, and if you happen to have a sewing machine at home that you’re not using or know someone who knows their way around one – then you’re going to want to jump on board with this ASAP! They really are quite the game changer.
WHERE TO LOOK: Haberdashery shops, Dunelm Mill, The Range and independent fabric shops are your best bets. Alternatively, try on Amazon or Ebay!
CARDS ARE FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR BIRTHDAYS
Although this might not sound like the most sophisticated of hacks – it is one that absolutely I swear by and should never be underestimated! Always be on the look out for prints that are inspiring to you.
As with most things in life – every one is going to appeal to different things, so you can just go crazy with the colours and prints that represent your personality, stand out to you and most importantly – make you feel good. As for the frame? Well, sometimes simple really is best – that way you can just let the winning picture take centre stage.
This is particularly useful when I want something to fill that awkward blank space on the wall – and because you’re not spending so much on the actual art, you can switch it up whenever you get bored.
These flower prints right here? I found them in a one off Japanese shop hidden down a street in Central London. I know, of all places right?! It was the mini boutiques of flowers (heart emoji’s all round!) that initially lurred me in – but the moment these beautifully crafted cards caught my inner plant ladies eye, I knew I wanted in. What I loved was that each flower came with a different meaning (written at the back) and actually they work together so well when put together as a trio. And POW! Just like that, I had an instant wall filler that not only looks cool as hell but didn’t cost me my monthly wage. I’ll take that!
WHERE TO LOOK: Head to your local gift, card or stationary shops or independent boutiques to find the best, most unique prints.
